Victoria Park (known colloquially as Vicky Park or the People’s Park)[1][2] is 86.18 hectares of open space [3] that opened in 1845. It stretches out across part of the East End of London, bordering parts of Bethnal Green, Hackney, and Bow, such as along Old Ford Road, London E3 and Victoria Park Road E9. The park is entirely within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
A PLAYLINK play consultant was commissioned by Tower Hamlets to redesign two traditional play areas in Victoria Park.
Metal boundary fencing was removed, creating larger playable areas; and new boundary planting was introduced.
‘Loose parts’ formed part of the new scheme, as did all year round playable sand and water with water pumps and channels. Loose gravel and sand were the materials used for the Impact Absorbent Surfaces. Other features included large giant swings; a rotating disc; high; level climbing areas; large wide slides accommodating up to four children or teenagers at a time A new wheel park was introduced for skateboarders and riders.
Visits to and usage of the play areas have increased dramatically.
